      S?o Paulo, December 1st 2007

Dear President of the affiliated National Society,

On behalf of the education committee of the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, I would like to inform you that during the 4th World Congress of the ISPRM held in Seoul in June 2007, there was a very important meeting entitled "Issues related to Academic Physiatry: an International View", thanks to the combined efforts of Profs. John Whyte and Chang il Park. There were over 60 participants and the most brilliant minds in the field of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine attended the meeting.

Representatives from most ISPRM regions presented a brief overview of the issues on academic Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine in the United States (John White), Europe (Alain Delarque), Asia (Leonard Li), their working plan and ideas for further discussion.

With that background and insight, the education committee of the ISPRM is kindly asking all ISPRM National Societies Congress organizers to schedule a time during your next National Congress to present and further discuss the "World Action Plan for Initial Education" (WAPIE.PRM) and the role of your National Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine structures in its development. The European role will was presented to the European delegates during the meeting of the UEMS, PRM Section and Board in Bucharest, September 2007 by Prof. Alain Delarque and by me in the American Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation meeting in Boston, USA, September 2007.

I would like to suggest that you equally discuss the same agenda during your next National Congress. Is it possible to arrange an hour discussion for that topic?

The "World Action Plan for Initial Education" (WAPIE.PRM) has three main objectives:

      1. to perform a survey to identify all existing Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine programs offered at medical schools, residency or postgraduate teaching and training programs. The final goal will be to create an undergraduate and postgraduate minimum curricula endorsed by ISPRM that could be used in an international level,

      2. to facilitate access to the best level of education in PRM for the PRM trainees during their postgraduate teaching and training programs,

      3. to facilitate access to research and research activities to the PRM trainees.

I would also like this opportunity to proudly advertise the free access to the electronic version of ISPRM official journal named Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine to all ISPRM affiliated National Societies in good standing (payment of the annual dues). The education committee would like to encourage the young cdb_1_members of ISPRM to be involved as soon as possible as becoming cdb_1_members of their National Societies to be eligible for this free service.

Could you please, send me the name and contact information, including e-mail address of the scientific chairperson of your National Society?

Lastly, but not least important, the education committee of the ISPRM has created a leading International Program for Rehabilitation Research Education. The main objectives of the program are to gather leading researchers in our field to create and provide the best level of updated information regarding the practice of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine to our cdb_1_members:

      1. The cdb_1_members-only session of the website will offer eight evidence based Clinical Updates in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine per semester,

      2. The cdb_1_members-only session of the website will provide an on-line Journal Club to teach ISPRM cdb_1_members to critically appraise scientific publications on diagnostic testing, randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, meta-analyses and clinical guidelines focused on evidence based information,

      3. The education committee will offer an intensive course on clinical trials in 2008, to be delivered via teleconference. Our goal is to train the most number of physiatrists to perform good quality clinical research in order to increase the rate of successful national and international grant applications acceptance and publication in high quality peer-reviewed journals and raise possible international scientific exchange programs for multicenter studies. If you or any member of your National Society are interested in receiving the training, tutoring students and researchers Worldwide, or participating in multi-center international trials, please find enclosed the detailed information of the course. Do not hesitate to contact me through the e-mail address at marta@ .br or the central office for further detailed information.

Looking forward the valuable contribution of your National Society to actively participate in this taskforce which will certainly contribute to the growth of our specialty throughout the World, allowing all ISPRM cdb_1_members to feel privileged to be a physiatrist!!

      Sincerely yours,

      Marta Imamura MD PhD

      Chair, ISPRM Education Committee
